MANUFACTURING, THE FIRST APPLICATION

Manufacturing first, because that is where the problem is most visible.

One part of an answer sits in a machine. Another in a maintenance record. Another in a quality system. Another in an OEM manual. The most important piece may exist only in the experience of a technician who has worked that line for twenty years. The architecture is broader than one industry, but this is where it earns its keep first.

A line stops.

Normally the investigation means checking machine history, production records, the maintenance system, quality records and the procedure, then finding the right person to ask. Each source holds part of the story. Cogmosis is designed to bring that evidence together so the team can work the event as one connected problem rather than six separate searches.

Other problems that look like this.

The machine is still running. Something is changing.

Vibration, temperature, cycle behavior, quality results and maintenance history can each look unremarkable on their own. The important signal is often the relationship among them rather than any single alarm.

The same fault keeps happening.

Three incidents get handled as three faults, each closed on its own work order. Connected evidence can show they share a pattern, which moves the work from repeating a repair toward understanding what changed.

The technician knows what the manual doesn't.

People retire, people leave, shifts change, and undocumented experience goes with them. That knowledge can be held as evidence with provenance, alongside machine data and formal procedure.

Five systems each hold one piece of the answer.

Investigations routinely require a person to assemble a picture by hand from systems that do not talk to each other. The picture existed last time too, and was not kept.

The work order should not be the end of learning.

Work is done, something is found, the asset returns to service. What was actually found is the only way to know whether the original understanding was right, and it is the part most often skipped.

What actually happened during the event?

Machine events, sensor history, production records, operator actions and quality data each hold part of an incident. Together they can be reassembled into one connected history.

Same intelligence, different surfaces.

The surface changes with the moment. The evidence, the provenance and the governance do not.

Workstation

For investigation with time to think. Evidence, relationships and provenance laid out for a considered decision.

Mobile

In the aisle and between assets, where the question is short and the answer needs to be too.

Assisted eyewear

At the asset, hands busy. Evidence arrives in the field of view and what the technician says comes back as evidence with their name on it.

Scenarios described here are illustrative and describe how Cogmosis is designed to work. They are not customer deployments.

Beyond manufacturing.

The underlying approach is not specific to manufacturing. Cogmosis is being designed around evidence, decisions and outcomes, which apply wherever important knowledge is fragmented across people, systems and physical operations.

That means the same approach can apply to other environments with the same problem. We are not claiming solutions in those domains today, and we will not describe one as deployed before it is.

Start with the numbers you already measure.

You already measure all of this. The question is where the time actually goes inside each number.

MTTRMEAN TIME TO REPAIR

The clock includes diagnosis, and diagnosis is often mostly assembling context from a historian, a CMMS, a quality system and somebody's memory.

Cogmosis is designed to have that context assembled and time-ordered before the technician arrives, so the repair can start closer to the actual fault.

Wrench timeTOOL TIME UTILIZATION

Walking, searching, waiting on a parts answer, waiting on somebody who knows. All of it is on the clock and none of it is repair.

Evidence, procedure and part availability can reach the technician at the asset instead of requiring a trip back to a terminal.

Repeat failuresBAD ACTORS

Each event is closed on its own work order. Nobody compares three of them, so the same fix gets applied a third time.

Recurrence can be made visible as one connected history rather than three unrelated tickets, which moves the work from repair towards cause.

AvailabilityTHE A IN OEE

Degradation is usually visible somewhere before it stops the line, spread across signals that each look unremarkable on their own.

The relationship between weak signals is treated as evidence, so a change in condition can be investigated while the asset is still running and before it stops.

First pass yieldSCRAP AND REWORK

Quality sees the defect. Maintenance sees the equipment. Production sees the lot and the changeover. Rarely the same person, rarely the same week.

A defect can be read against equipment condition and operating context at the time it was produced, rather than reconstructed from memory later.

PM effectivenessNOT PM COMPLIANCE

Compliance can sit at one hundred percent while the same asset keeps failing, because the task does not address the real failure mode.

What was actually found can return as evidence, so the program can be judged on outcomes rather than on tasks completed.

StockoutsMRO AND SPARES

The part is identified once the machine is already down, and then somebody walks to the crib to find out whether it is there.

The part can be named with the diagnosis and checked against what is on hand, with any reorder drafted for a person to approve.

Tribal knowledgeWORKFORCE TURNOVER

The most valuable troubleshooting knowledge in the plant is undocumented and walks out with retirements and shift changes.

What an experienced person says at the asset can be captured as evidence with provenance, attributed and timestamped, next to the machine data.

If finding out gets shorter, the time to fix can get shorter.

If the same asset fails three times because nobody compared the three, comparing them is the fix. That is the whole argument, and you can check it against your own numbers rather than ours.

AFTER AN EVENT

A problem doesn't begin when the line stops.

By the time an event is recorded, most of the work around it has already happened. Detecting it, working out what is going on, locating parts and people, repairing, verifying, and recording what was found. Only one of those is repair.

The proportions above are illustrative rather than measured. Put your own numbers on the same shape and see where the time sits in your operation.

When the last segment gets skipped, the first one happens again.

An illustrative recurrence. Same asset, same shape, three times, each closed on its own work order. Without the three side by side, the third repair is the same guess as the first.

START WHERE YOU ARE

This does not need a greenfield plant.

The starting environment is the one you have. Existing machines, existing controls, the ERP and maintenance and quality systems already in place, the manuals and drawings and past work orders, and the people who know how this equipment actually behaves.

Cogmosis is designed to make that environment more useful rather than to require a more modern one first. As better sensors, newer equipment and more capable tools arrive, they add to the context already being built instead of restarting it.
